IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENT ABOUT Bristol Anarchist BOOKFAIR 2018

From Bristol Anarchist Bookfair

The Bristol Anarchist Bookfair 2018 has had to cancel the booking with our venue. As a result the full-scale bookfair has been postponed, and a smaller event will run on the same day at the Black Swan.

The primary reason for this is that it has been brought to our attention that the Academy Trust who manage City Academy have a sponsorship deal with arms-selling dickheads Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce do very big business with the Turkish military, who are currently blasting the Kurdish region of Afrin, in northern Syria, to pieces. They also blew up the convoy that resulted in the recent tragic death of the Kurdish womens army (YPJ) British volunteer Anna Campbell, along with many Kurdish revolutionaries. We had a chat, and decided there was no way we were comfortable going ahead with the Bookfair in that venue. We’re a small collective running at reduced capacity, at this difficult time for Bristol’s anarchist community, and the loss of our venue means our only realistic option has been to radically downsize the event. We did have a last minute search for alternative venues available on the day, but there were none free that would allow us to run the full bookfair extravaganza we had planned.

But don’t be too downhearted, as the committed and the anarcho-curious amongst you will be able to get a flavour of Bookfair on the 12th. Our afterparty venue the Black Swan (at 438 Stapleton Road in Easton) has stepped into the breach and during the day we’ll be cramming the venue with as many book, zine and campaign stalls as we can and hosting a tasty vegan bbq in the garden! Plus 30 seconds up the road at BASE (formerly Kebele social centre) we’ll be choosing some of our favourite workshops for you to get involved with and along with all this there’ll be a kids space. We have our party all set to be a banger long into the night in the same space and we hope to see you there.

In the evening the Black Swan will play host to a bookfair after party of epic proportions taking us all the way through till 6am,  and raising money for anti-arms trade campaigning.

Outside the bookfair, of course, the weekend before, the Bristol Radical History Festival takes place on Sunday 6th May. You may also be interested in attending  radical/anarchist bookfairs around the UK throughout 2018

Massive apologies to stallholders, workshop hosts and anyone else that has been inconvenienced by this – we could have spotted this earlier, but it passed us by. If you have contacted us regarding a stall or a workshop, we will be in touch separately.

The Bristol Anarchist Bookfair will return in all its glory – and if you want to get involved in making sure that that happens, please contact bristolanarchistbookfair[at]riseup.net!

Bristol remembers Anna Campbell.

From Brighton Antifascists’ Facebook page

Today [24th March] a small demonstration was held in Bristol in memory of Anna Campbell. Anna died fighting against ISIS and the Turkish state in Afrin last week.

Simultaneously in London people took to the streets. Today demonstrations were held all over the world in support of Afrin for world Afrin day, but the demonstration in London was dedicated to Anna’s honor and was headed by those closest to Anna.

Anna was an anarchist, antifascist, squatter, hunt sab, prison abolitionist and all round radical revolutionary who had travelled to Rojava to fight with the YPJ for the Kurdish revolution. In Bristol 200 + of Anna’s friends, family and other comrades who had not had the pleasure of meeting her marched in solidarity to honour Anna’s life. The march lasted for two hours taking the main roads and disrupting business as usual throughout the city.

Afrin has been besieged by the Turkish state for the past two months. And from today has been fully occupied by Turkish forces though resistance continues. The YPG and YPJ have been fighting ISIS in Iraqi, Syrian and Turkish Kurdistan. Yet the British state continues to arrest international fighters who return to England under terrorism laws and arming the Turkish state in its offensive against Kurdish-held areas.

We stand in solidarity with Anna’s fight and that of Kurdish revolution.

We send our deepest condolences to Anna’s friends and family.

Anna is with us!
We fight on!

Make tomorrow count – if you can’t make it to Cardiff please get involved in the Communications Blockade.

As Turkey’s assault on the Kurdish people continues, Saudi Arabia’s war on the people of Yemen worsens and we continue to arm Israel, we really need to make our opposition to the arms trade felt.

The Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff needs to know that this ARMS FAIR (disguised by the name DPRTE) is not wanted in Cardiff or anywhere else. The event, proudly advertised on their website as ‘The Defence Procurement Event of The Year’, has BAE Systems as one of its main exhibitors, the same company who supplies Saudi Arabia with all the weapons it needs to bomb the defenceless country of Yemen.

Let’s overwhelm them phone calls, emails, Twitter and Instagram messages telling them this. Keep it polite, just state clearly your opposition to the event. You can also leave a message on their FB page.

24th March #WorldAfrinDay Brighton → London

Brighton Comrades:

Friends, comrades and others inspired by the struggle of Anna Campbell (Shehîd Hêlîn Qereçox) and her commitment to the Kurdish Freedom Movement will be going together to the demonstration in London for #WorldAfrinDay.

Event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/205096633582492/

Meet Brighton station by the piano at 10:30am to travel together.
After the demonstration there will be a memorial for Anna at the Kurdish Community Centre in London.

If people would like to stay overnight in London to attend the Newroz (Kurdish New Year) celebration the following day, sleeping space can be organised.

Newroz has long been a symbol of struggle and resistance for the Kurdish people and its celebration has long been illegal in Turkey.

“Hêlîn, you are going to be my way. Now I should not feel lost anymore. Every time the forces of the state, patriarchy and capitalism try to influence me I will think of you, and you will be my light to continue always looking forward. Like you always did. Hêlîn, your murder just gives me more strength and generates in me more anger. The pain is not going to blind me, it will only make me stronger. I know that while following your steps I am on the right path, the road to freedom, which was always your way.” (Internationalist Commune)

24 March is #WorldAfrinDay

24 March 2018 Meet at 1pm Marble Arch Station, marching to Parliament Square

Turkish forces and their allied Jihadist mercenaries began their invasion of the predominantly-Kurdish Afrin region of Northern Syria on 20 January 2018.

Turkey’s fascist leader Erdogan declares he will “Return Afrin to its real owners”. This is a call for ethnic cleansing and genocide, carried out with the complicity and support of international powers, including Britain.

Afrin has been one of the most peaceful regions of Syria throughout the bloody “civil” war that has raged for 7 years. Huge numbers of people displaced by war in other parts of Syria went to Afrin to find refuge.

This invasion has already killed and injured thousands, and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Meanwhile, the British government makes more deals with Erdogan, selling more weapons to Turkey, to be used in this assault.

The Internationalist Commune of Rojava have called for a global day of action and international solidarity with Afrin on 24 March. On #WorldAfrinDay we will raise our voices, march and take action in solidarity with Afrin.

Afrin is not alone. The democratic, ecological, women’s revolution being built there will be defended worldwide. We will also honour our dear friend Anna Campbell (Hêlîn Qereçox) who gave her life protecting Afrin.

We demand the UK government to:

  • Stop Turkey’s invasion of Afrin
  • Provide humanitarian support for civilians
  • Stop UK’s arms trade to Turkey
  • Request an independent investigation in Afrin

Anna Campbell

With great sadness we mark the death of Bristol IWW member Anna Campbell,  a 26 year-old plumber formerly from Lewes, East Sussex, who was killed by a Turkish air strike along with 100 other Y.P.J. volunteers on the 15th March.

Anna was a veteran of the battle of Deir ez-Zor against the daesh fascists and went on to participate in the defence of Afrin against their erstwhile allies, the equally fascist Erdogan regime.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends, in the firm conviction that her sacrifice will not be in vain.

Long live the Rojava revolution!

STOP TURKEY’S WAR CRIMES AND CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

#DefendAfrin #NoFlyZone4Afrin

Download 2-sided pdf A5 Leaflet

On 20 January, the Turkish state together with Salafist groups (Al-Qaeda, Al-Nusra, FSA, Heyet Tahrir El Şam and former IS terrorists) launched a military assault against the Kurdish region of Afrin/North-Syria.

This invasion of another country is a blunt violation of international law.

  • Crimes against humanity; Serious violations of international law; Aggression
  • It is an action of genocide – the attacks are aimed at an ethnic group as such

Erdogan’s current attack on Afrin is to be put into the context of Turkey’s longstanding racist hostility towards any prospect of Kurdish self-determination, including democratic rights within existing states.

The US, the EU and their allies tacitly approved the operation by claiming that it is Turkey’s right to defend its borders. Russia, meanwhile, consented to the assault by allowing Turkey to use the Syrian airspace. They are the same powers whom have not managed to organize peace talks for Syria over the last seven years. Since the war in Syria started in 2011, Afrin has been among the safest areas of the devastated country. Afrin has been a shelter for Yezidis, Christians, Alevis, as well as Muslims from all ethnic backgrounds.

And now; Turkey is killing civilians, committing a war crime and genocide in Afrin

  • Until now tens of civilians have been killed, most of which are women and children, and hundreds have been injured.
  • Turkey, not satisfied with only killing civilians, has now started erasing what is left of the history in Northern Syria. Turkish war-jets destroyed a 3.000-year-old temple – the Ain Dara Hittite temple complex.
  • Turkey is using weapons such as NAPALM and cluster bombs on civilians which were

banned internationally by the United Nations’ Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.

Stop Turkey`s war against Kurds

  • The people of Afrin are facing genocide. The situation is sensitive and urgent. We call upon all people with a conscience to support Afrin and to stand in solidarity.
  • We call upon the US, EU, UN to understand the reality on the ground and take a clear stand against the Turkish state’s attacks.
