“Welcome to the Pre-Strike Solidarity Piss Up!” Lured by the prospect of free food and a chance to distribute some seditious propaganda, your correspondent braved the miserable weather to attend a rather unique event – at least round here. Hosted by Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Trades Union Council ahead of the public sector pensions strike on Thursday, for those not balloted to express solidarity with the strikers and pickets. Speakers were: David Higgins (Unison), Michael Derbyshire (PCS), Berewyn Long (PCS), Neil Duncan-Jordan (BCPTUC President), Mandy Priest (PCS) and Steve Attwill (Unite).
Beer and sandwiches – but not a mention of Milliband and his cronies, the hum in the hall was all about direct action, wildcats and bashing the fash – or maybe that was just me… Excellent musical entertainment from Cath Burke. To close the show, Darren and Cath attempted a rendition of “There is power in a Union”; now I can’t sing – but at least I know all the words!
It’s now clear to anyone half awake that we need to respond to capitalism’s final crisis as a class – if we don’t sort ourselves out this dying regime will be replaced by something even nastier. Public and private, skilled and unskilled, contract and casual, employed and unemployed, residents and tenants, disabled, retired, students; these are artificial divisions imposed on us by a system not of our making. We must rise together and take control of our own lives, once and for all.
“An injury to one is an injury to all!”
